Borough Market
London's top food market

Open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Borough Market is the best place in London to shop for fresh, seasonal food produce. It also London's oldest food market. The quality of the food is amazing. Producers come from all over the country and you really can buy most things. The area also has some nice eateries and bars so it makes for a lovely way to spend a Saturday.

Too cute!

Not only are the food and produce great, the atmosphere is wonderful. You feel like you've been transported back a hundred years to a proper market.
As for the NYC twin - It's not outdoors and not quite as big, but Chelsea Market in New York - midtown west at 16th St and 9th Ave - is another great place to buy produce and specialty foods. It's in the old Nabisco factory and also has a really cool vibe. Bonus: there are often designer trunk shows in one of the open spaces on weekends!
Love it

I live within a short crawl from the market and if I'm not golfing on a Saturday, that's where you'll find me. My top two places are: Brandisa for breakfast, Applebees for lunch or dinner. Wouldn't be seen dead in the queue for Monmouth coffee though - not exactly Starbucks, but a 15 minute queue to get a cuppa not my cuppa tea if you get my drift.
Agree to the earlier comment: if you want to food shop - go to Brixton, it's half price of what you pay in Borough, and quite colourfull too...

On frequent visits to London, this is always a must go to place for: looking and buying; always changing; great fast-bite stalls for lunch....or excellent restaurants for sit-down meals. I never leave empty handed. Neal's Yard cheese; baked goods; fresh fruits & veg. -- Gets crowded at lunchtime and after work; great "buzz" at all times. -- And, it is nearby Southwark Cathedral, Shakespeare's Globe, Tate Modern, et al.
Try the venison burgers.

I last went at christmas and had an excellent few hours wandering around taking in surroundings. The market sells the best mix of food in London ranging from the usual to unusual and all at top notch standards. I love this place.
Try the venison burgers.

A huge amount to take in in terms of crowds, colours, sounds and smells but an ultimately compelling place. Not too big to scare you away and full of exciting foods/products are great prices. Great place to wander around on Sundays.

Best kept secret - Thursdays

Most people don't know this but the market and shops are just as open on Thursdays as Fridays. I work around there so don't normally see it on a Saturday but Thursdays are half as crowded.
Good, but not great

I went to Borough Market last Friday for the first time in ages and left empty handed. The whole place seemed a little...stale. And overpriced. I prefer Brixton Market: ripe and delicious fruit and veg overflow from every stall and negotiations with stall staff is a must. Brixton's got a vibe that Borough just doesn't have.
Look around just outside the market.

The market itself is great, although its produce are expensive. Good fun just walking around. Just round the corner in Southwark Street is the Hop Exchange building, if you can pop your head in there you be pleasantly suprised. The market is only there Fridays and Saturdays, but the pubs and cafes are still there and don't forget the 'Barrow Boy and Banker' on London Bridge, best pint in London.
Even better, go on a Thursday

Less stalls but also less punters so you can actually browse properly rather than being carried along by a sea of gormless pedestrains.
A must for the weekend

* Go on Friday as it's less crowded
* Go hungry as you would like to try everything
* Take home - olives, cheese, olive oil, bread, fish etc ... (actually there is a lot)
Enjoy
Amazing foods.

Best market in London my a$$ no chance. I'd much rather go on a Friday to Portobello, pretty much the same as a Saturday but without the crowds.
Comfort food Heaven!

Stunning food

The food here is stunning, although I have to be honest that the chocolate brownies which purport they are the best in the world have definitely been beaten!
You must go!!

A really exciting place, a place where everything sensory is stimulated. The great thing is that almost everything sold is brought in by small growers mostly from England.
Go with an open mind

I've been going here for years, it used to be open once a month and grew from there. My advice is to go to the less obvious stalls, the food is just as good but not so expensive. Let's be honest, Borough Market is pricey, not a place to do a weekly shop, more a place to treat yourself to fantastic coffee - Monmouth Coffee please and a Flour Power City brownie. Try and get there really early before the crowds come, its magical when its quiet.

So good it could almost be continental European, but in reality most of the produce is from Britain.

I always bring visitors to Borough Market, just thinking about it excites my taste buds! And you can follow that with a walk towards the South Bank of the Thames, past Clink Street debtors jail museum, Shakespeare's Globe, the Tate Modern, etc, all the way to the London Eye.
Fantastic Food

If you are a visitor and rent a flat in London for any amount of time, this is a great place to buy your fresh food for a week or two. The variety and quality of the food are fantastic. Some things that you just don't see in the U.S. Even if you don't buy anything (not likely), it is a wonderful place to browse or even people watch. We always buy some unusual non-perishables to bring back to the states.

Oh the smell

I love Borough Market. The smell of the food and fresh produce is unbelievable and, as Toonfan said it is impossible to leave not buying anything. However, be prepared for the crowds, specially in summer around lunch time.

A brilliant day out

Nothing like walking through the stalls on an empty stomach and gorging yourself on an incredible variety of treats - venison burgers, oysters, olives, fish, and on and on and on. you can't beat ending a successful day of gastronomic pleasure with a few pints and some people watching at the Market Porter.
Beyond the market stalls at Borough

I love Konditor and Cook for great cakes and think they are the best at the market. I also love the Brindisa cafe and restaurant. It serves amazing Spanish food for breakfast lunch and dinner. The wine list is superb! They have a deli in the market too where you can buy all of the produce, but it is much nicer to sit and people watch.

Small and perfect, Borough market is a great introduction to some of Britain's favourite 'grub'. Treat yourself to a hog roast sandwich or jacket potato loaded with bubbling hot cheese.
I defy anyone to go without sampling something.

Hot Facts from LeCool
The area round Borough Market is full of untouched little back-streets, and film-crews are a pretty regular occurrence. Perhaps best known is 15 Park Street – the home of the gang from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Just round the corner is the setting for a clash of the titans, a battle of mighty warriors , the eternal war between the forces of good and evil. That’s right, pretty Bedale Street in Southwark is the setting for the fight between Darcy and Cleaver in Bridget Jones’ Diary.
