The High Line is New York's latest inspired public place. Retrofitting an unused elevated railroad trestle, the pedestrian park on Manhattan's West Side links the fashionable Meatpacking neighborhood with artistic Chelsea. Keeping in the spirit of the wild plants that spring up as volunteers on old rail lines, the designers have planted many different species of mostly native plants. Strolling along the elevated park offers new views of the skyline and the Hudson River.
